Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth during its development. A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. A modern root canal treatment is relatively painless and extremely effective.
With proper care, even teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. But sometimes, a tooth that has been treated doesn’t heal properly and can become painful or reinfected months or even years after treatment. Using our surgical microscope, we are able to remove complex restorative materials like crowns, core material, and fillings. We will then re-clean, re-fill, and re-seal the canals. If the canals are unusually narrow or blocked, we may recommend endodontic surgery.
An apicoectomy, or root-end resection, may be needed when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure. Your endodontist performs this micro-surgical procedure by first making you comfortable by applying local anesthesia before opening the gum tissue near the tooth to see the underlying bone and to remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The very end of the root is also removed. A small filling may be placed to seal the end of the root canal and a few stitches or sutures are placed to help the tissue heal.
We are now offering therapeutic and cosmetic Botox therapy in our office. For cosmetics, we offer three treatment areas in the upper face (forehead lines, crow's feet, and glabellar complex). For therapeutics, we offer Botox to patients who have pain originating from facial muscles or who refuse to wear mouthguards for bruxism.
