This procedure is performed with a numbing agent. After the procedure, there are usually no restrictions on driving or returning to work. A doctor is always available if problems arise after treatment. Continue taking medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems, and other conditions as directed by your doctor. Eat a full breakfast or lunch as needed. If your doctor or dentist has recommended take antibiotics prior to dental treatment for joint replacement.
Your tooth and the gums around it may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. Please use warm salt water rinses to help with soreness. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist. Refrain from touching, tapping, and/or pushing on the tooth, as this will elicit unnecessary discomfort following root canal treatment and may delay healing. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking 600 mg of ibuprofen (Advil/Mortin) and 500 mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol) together at the same time every 6 to 8 hours.
Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact our office immediately.
The office telephone is answered day and night. If you need to call after hours , please do not hesitate to call.
Endodontic treatment is now complete. The root canal system is permanently closed. However, the exterior is sealed with a temporary restoration. Contact your restorative dentist and make an appointment. A full report on the treatment is sent to the restorative dentist. Your tooth is more susceptible to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You must chew on one side until the dentist has placed the core and a protective filling, usually a crown. If your tooth is severely weakened, an endodontist or restorative dentist can place a post and core inside the tooth. The restorative dentist and your endodontist will determine the appropriate filling that will best protect your teeth.
